Butler Field is embedded in my childhood, from seeing an open grave of a Guale Indian, to all the sno-cones at my brother’s baseball games. I would ride my bike from East Beach to the Lighthouse. Freedom at ten years of age.
Emma Lee Ramsey of "Bessie Jones and the Sea Island Singers" raised me and taught me to whistle and snap my fingers and how to talk with God in song and heal wounded wild birds.
My Mom could sing the Hallelujah Chorus high soprano part and was the voice of the choir. I would stand next to her and pray someday I could do it like she could. My daughter is the 8th generation on this island, and can sing.
Butler Field is the culmination and resolve of all these years and experiences. I come full circle and embrace the place I love and left so long ago.
