The Kingston Trio was formed in 1957 by Bob Shane, Nick Reynolds and Dave Guard, and quickly became a top draw at San Francisco’s Purple Onion and "hungry i" clubs. In June, 1958 their fist album was released and "Tom Dooley," a song from that album rocketed to the top of the charts. It was soon followed by other hits, including "The Tijuana Jail" and "The M.T.A.," the latter of which told the tale of Charlie who was doomed to ride forever on Boston’s subways. Over the next three years the Trio recorded and released nine more albums, made numerous television appearances and performed in most of the top night clubs and at many colleges around the country, personifying the image of college boys having a good time with their music.
